Now live – Victory Day Parades on Red Square and all across Russia to commemorate 70th anniversary of victory in WWII. The parades are held in 26 cities and organizers have promised the biggest ever all-day spectacular.

LIVE: non-stop coverage of V-Day Parades from across Russia, from Vladivostock, Novosibirsk, Sevastopol, Moscow and St. Petersburg to Murmansk and Kaliningrad, May 9, 2015. Lots of interesting bits and each city is different. Between 1:10:00 and 1:23:00 watch a very interesting historic parade in Tyumen’, Siberia. At 1:40:00 – interactive map of the biggest battles and dates during the 1941-45 Great war period. At 2:00:00 St. Pete navy parade, followed by Sevastopol. 

‘Immortal Regiment’ march: Putin joins hundreds of thousands paying tribute to WW2 soldiers

Overall 12 million people in Russia and beyond took part in the Immortal Regiment marches. This was a sight to behold. A boundless sea of people participated in Moscow, carrying pictures of their relatives who perished in the war. Putin joined, carrying a photo of his father.

    There is one song that has become the anthem of the Victory. It’s called simply “Victory Day”, and you could hear the music from it at the end of the parade. Here it is, performed by Iosif Kobzon, with very potent video imagery:

I am looking forward to singing the Victory Day songs that will be written for the day when humanity everywhere on our beautiful Mother Earth has chosen to end all wars forever. I believe ending war as a human practice would be the most meaningful way to honor the living, those who will follow and all the dead in all the wars we have ever fought.     Dear Lada:
    I would like your take on two things I heard somewhat later – I was 14 on Victory Day – my birthday is in October.
    1. Stalin purportedly raised a toast to the USA at Yalta saying “without whom this war would have been lost!”
    2. The Rusian Army ate a lot of Spam (the original “Spiced Ham” canned meat, that is).

      I think both toasts took place, so that would be correct. But I don’t know if it was a lot of Spam or just a little, and just sometimes, when it was available. Most would prob say they never saw such a thing in their rations. 😉
      Btw, thanks for explainig what Spam means: lived in the US for 20 years+ and never knew what that abbreviation meant. Never tried it either. 😉

      As to the toast, some can be gracious hosts, right? And recognize someone’s contribution when they are allies? Where I come from, this is consired a sign of true strength, not weakness.

      You don’t seriously believe Russia couldn’t have won that war alone? Look at the map presented in video 2, or anywhere on the net. Soviet Army was on approach to Germany by the time second front opened. The second front opening was to contain USSR, not to help – this is a universally recognized fact, actually articulated clearly by US and UK at the time. Stalin asked for the second front in 1941, 1942 and 1943 – not in 1944.

      Of course USA helped – did they have a choice? The more productive ‘help’ was in the form of LendLease. There were armaments supplied and food.

      But for that USSR paid through the nose, so is it really help or profit? We do know that USA emerged out of that war as the only country that profited handsomely from it; its Great Depession ended and economy was booming since all of Europe and USSR, too, were paying it to supply things they couldn’t produce because of destruction. And that was altruistic? So, don’t confuse a gracious host who is trying to extend a hand of friendship with reality. Russians, unfortunately, always tried to see and hear no evil in favor of harmony. Until Ukraine. Here US has sooooo overstepped all boundaries that this will never be forgotten.

      Besides, according to Starikov, whom I trust on the issue as it’s his specialty, too many LendLease ships were sunk, sometimes unnecessarily. The moment the ship was hit by Germans, they avacuated the crew and sunk the ship with all the ‘help’ on board. That was only possible because USSR paid for merchandize on loading, not on delivery, so they didn’t care if it was delivered. Russian crews, sometimes even manned by women, would normally do everything first to repair the damage after a hit and would somehow try to get to the port. There are many known cases of them saving a wounded ship, even with women as crews, as I said. Russians thought that was a deliberate sabotage of deliveries.

      Also, LendLease started only in November 1941, although it was supposed to start in July, I believe. They just waited to see if Hitler’s Barbarossa plan and blitzcrieg would be fulfilled and they wouldn’t have to worry about USSR any more. Nice allies!

      Also as I said at one point, I do believe Roosevelt was genuinely pro-good relations with Russia, but other forces who really pulled the strings had a different opinion.

      That said, I have a new post coming – about what went on at the invisible front in March of 1945. It’ll explain sooooo much about what USA was trying to pull just before Soviet Army entered Berlin.

      P.S. To that I want to add that those simple Americans and Brits who fought and risked their lives in WWII, genuinely tried to do their job, and they genuinely thought they were fighting fascism. This should be honored and it always was by Russia.

      But US/UK/Canada/Poland are shooting themselves in the foot. By continuing to deny the true role of the USSR and Russia, and by continuing to malign Russia, they ensure that the role of those who honestly fought from their own countries will be denied, or overlooked, by Russians.
      Do you get my meaning?

      In Russia we have a saying: “Don’t dig a grave for someone else, you’ll fall in it yourself.”

      A note about Spam from my family’s history. It was apparently distributed among the civilian population as rations. And some of it was past its due date. My grandmother got a severe poisoning from it and had damaged liver for the rest of her life, being limited in what she could and could not eat after that.

        That’s terrible, but not surprising. The rations US sends as aid to Ukraine ATO today are also past due. There was a scandal about that recently, but Kiev hushed it up.

    I found a site, called People’s Memory, listing archive information about the Soviet soldiers, who fought (and died) in WWII. And there I found the documents about my grand-uncle, and his war path, which matches with the stories I remember from my childhood: that he started the war at Moscow and went all the way to Berlin as part of a tank division! His division was surrounded for 6 months and cut off from the rest of the army, presumed dead. I remember his uniform, covered in medals and orders, when he came to Moscow each 9th of May to participate in the Parade and meet his brothers in arms. He passed away in 2000…
