Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding his annual news conference in Moscow. 2016 press conference lasted over four hours! Similar Q&A sessions in the past have lasted similarly, several hours. The record was set in 2008, when Vladimir Putin spent four hours and 40 minutes speaking to journalists.

What stood out for me the most:

Mr President, the world is going through a period of fundamental change. We saw the expression of popular will, when people vote against old political concepts and old elites. Britain voted to leave the European Union, although it remains to be seen how the Brexit issue will pan out. Many say that Trump won because people voted, among other things, against the old establishment, the people they have become sick and tired of.
Have you discussed these changes with colleagues? What will a new global landscape look like? Do you remember what you said at the General Assembly when the UN celebrated its 70th anniversary? You said, ‘Do you understand what you have done?’ Where are things headed? We are still locked in a confrontation. You have mentioned the exchange about who has the strongest army. At his farewell news conference, Barack Obama, who is still your colleague, said that 37 percent of Republicans sympathise with you and hearing this Ronald Reagan would have rolled over in his grave.
Vladimir Putin: Hearing what?
Yevgeny Primakov: That 37 percent of Republican voters sympathise with you.
Vladimir Putin: Really?
Yevgeny Primakov: Yes. And if Ronald Reagan had heard it, he would have turned in his grave.
By the way, we as voters very much appreciate your power and that you can reach as far as Ronald Reagan. Our western colleagues often tell us that you have the power to manipulate the world, designate presidents, and interfere in elections here and there. How does it feel to be the most powerful person on Earth? Thank you.
Vladimir Putin: I have commented on this issue on a number of occasions. If you want to hear it one more time, I can say it again. The current US Administration and leaders of the Democratic Party are trying to blame all their failures on outside factors. I have questions and some thoughts in this regard.
We know that not only did the Democratic Party lose the presidential election, but also the Senate, where the Republicans have the majority, and Congress, where the Republicans are also in control. Did we, or I also do that? We may have celebrated this on the “vestiges of a 17th century chapel,” but were we the ones who destroyed the chapel, as the saying goes? This is not the way things really are. All this goes to show that the current administration faces system-wide issues, as I have said at a Valdai Club meeting.
It seems to me there is a gap between the elite’s vision of what is good and bad and that of what in earlier times we would have called the broad popular masses. I do not take support for the Russian President among a large part of Republican voters as support for me personally, but rather see it in this case as an indication that a substantial part of the American people share similar views with us on the world’s organisation, what we ought to be doing, and the common threats and challenges we are facing. It is good that there are people who sympathise with our views on traditional values because this forms a good foundation on which to build relations between two such powerful countries as Russia and the United States, build them on the basis of our peoples’ mutual sympathy.
They would be better off not taking the names of their earlier statesmen in vain, of course. I’m not so sure who might be turning in their grave right now. It seems to me that Reagan would be happy to see his party’s people winning everywhere, and would welcome the victory of the newly elected President so adept at catching the public mood, and who took precisely this direction and pressed onwards to the very end, even when no one except us believed he could win. (Applause).
The outstanding Democrats in American history would probably be turning in their graves though. Roosevelt certainly would be because he was an exceptional statesman in American and world history, who knew how to unite the nation even during the Great Depression’s bleakest years, in the late 1930s, and during World War II. Today’s administration, however, is very clearly dividing the nation. The call for the electors not to vote for either candidate, in this case, not to vote for the President-elect, was quite simply a step towards dividing the nation. Two electors did decide not to vote for Trump, and four for Clinton, and here too they lost. They are losing on all fronts and looking for scapegoats on whom to lay the blame. I think that this is an affront to their own dignity. It is important to know how to lose gracefully.
But my real hope is for us to build business-like and constructive relations with the new President and with the future Democratic Party leaders as well, because this is in the interests of both countries and peoples.

A bit of Russian lore – for those who are interested:
Putin says: ‘We may have celebrated this on the “vestiges of a 17th century chapel,” but were we the ones who destroyed the chapel, as the saying goes?’
The expression Putin uses in this sentence comes from the beloved Soviet comedy, “The Caucasus Kidnapping, or the New Shurik’s Adventures.” One of the perennial favorites, we always watch it at home along with other Soviet comedies as part of our New Year’s celebration.
In it, the kindly, honest and naive Shurik, visiting Caucasus from Moscow, unwittingly gets embroiled in a plot to kidnap a bride against her will. Some may know that kidnapping of a bride is an old Muslim tradition.
Having discovered that he was duped, Shurik frees the the young lady he fell in love with and uncovers an entire conspiracy.
In the episode in question, Shurik, a total non-drinker, is seduced into drinking under the false pretenses of making a toast – a sacred ritual in Caucasus. The issued police report states that, being drunk, Shurik has sabotaged the opening of the new ‘Newlyweds Palace.’ Then – goes on the police report – on the vestiges of the chapel he…
Full of guilt for what he’d done, Shurik asks, ‘Excuse me, was it also me who destroyed the chapel?’ ‘No,’ replies the policeman humorously. ‘That happened a little earlier, in the 17th century.’
The film became a blockbuster and the phrase – ‘Was it also me who destroyed the chapel?’ – among many others from the golden era of the Soviet film, became one of the beloved ironic sayings in Russia and beyond. It is used when someone tells a lie, or tries to blame someone else for their own problems.

The quote about the chapel is about 13:30 minutes into the movie. Albeit the English translation is not so precise and says it happened in the 14. century. But better than nothing 🙂

In the original it probably was 14th century. I just went along with Putin’s quote – it was too long to explain otherwise. 🙂

Yes, that’s the film. But I don’t like how they translated the title. Granted, it’s a hard title to translate due to cultural barriers and different cultural references. My version reflects the correct cultural reference, therefore, it’s much better. Alas, the copyright belongs to Mosfilm – so it’s up to them.

And it just happens that the still image shows another popular phrase, which you would hare a lot of Russians use: “Ptishku zhalko”, which is probably better translated as “Pity about the birdie”.

I could say a lot about Kirby and – how do I put this mildly – his low IQ. But all it takes is looking at his face. He is completely confused.

Rescue helicopters have discovered debris in the Black Sea from a Russian military transport plane which went off radar en route to Syria. Most of the passengers on the Tu-154 were members of the famous Alexandrov Ensemble army choir.
According to preliminary reports, the Tupolev transport plane had 92 people on board, including 84 passengers and eight crew members. It went missing over the Black Sea at 2:40 GMT shortly after refueling at an airport near Sochi.
Most of the passengers on board were members of the Alexandrov Ensemble, the official choir of the Russian Armed Forces, the Russian Defense Ministry said. They were travelling from Moscow to the Russian military base Khmeimim near Latakia, Syria to take part in a Christmas celebration with troops deployed there. The head of the choir, conductor and composer Valery Khalilov, is among the 65 members of the ensemble presumed dead in the accident.

Alas, Elizaveta Glinka has perished in the crash, along with most of the Alexander Ensemble and 9 journalists.
Russian Ministry of Transportation says the probability of this being a terrorist attack is low, but I am not convinced – too much of a coincidence: a few days after the murder of ambassador Karlov, the crash happening over Black Sea, a few weeks after Obama threatened Russia with a wave of terror. The plane disappearing abruptly with the crew not having a chance to send a distress signal. Very bright flash seen and recorded on CCTV camera from the shore. The plane was only 8km from the coast, ascending, and would be well within reach of a portable RPG, fired from some small and fast boat…
They still haven’t found the recorders, but the tail section is located (the only larger fragment – the rest of the plane is in small pieces) on the sea floor, and that’s where the recorders are installed…

Yep, you’re right. It was a pre-meditated terror attack. No question in my mind. This was a very high-profile plane.
Exactly how it was done – another story. FSB isn’t going to share real info yet, maybe never.
There is also a lot of hoaxes and lies floating around – what else is new. Some SOBs are actually reaping their 15 minutes of fame off this tragedy.
Really wanted to have a joyful holiday and talk about positive things only – but it’s not meant to be.
I’ll try to have a piece on this out soon.

Also I’ve read that Trump is not using governmental security to protect himself but own private firms which kind of ties in with what you’ve said about Trump and his family’s concern for their security, but also indicates there is a huge schism within the US elite with one faction (the Trump one) hated so much by another faction that the former (first group) thinks their main figure would even be killed by the latter (second group). This is almost like a mini-civil war behind the scenes.

Two things I’d like to point out. Yesterday Marine Le Pen declared if she wins the presidency she’ll make France leave the EU and NATO, this is obviously good for Russia and she is generally pro-Russian.
Secondly sources say that the assassin who murdered the Russian ambassador in Ankara was a Gulenist who had ties to US forces in northern Iraq i.e. Obama was behind this. Also I’ve read that Trump is not using governmental security to protect himself but own private firms which kind of ties in with what you’ve said about Trump and his family’s concern for their security, but also indicates there is a huge schism within the US elite with one faction (the Trump one) hated so much by another faction that the former (first group) thinks their main figure would even be killed by the latter (second group). This is almost like a mini-civil war behind the scenes.
