Russian Presidential Election will take place on March 18, 2018. As election contenders were being announced in December 2017, we learned that at least 67 people decided to run for Russian president. Among these, at least two new faces are notable. As we approach the date, I plan to write extensively on the entire spread, Putin and his closest and most interesting competitors.
Today, I am giving you a sneak peek of who is who, plus the ratings for Putin and his nearest competitors so far. You’ll find the numbers quite telling, but keep in mind that the No. 2 (Pavel Grudinin) and No. 4 (Ksenia Sobchak) contenders are new and their popularity may grow as we approach March. Myself, I’d be curious to see what they can do with their growing popularity and how far they can take their platforms. The jury is still out.
I’ll also tell you that the No. 2, No. 3 (Vladimir Zhirinovsky) and No. 4 contenders do have interesting and legitimate things to say. It’s never a good idea to just throw out someone else’s serious ideas, if such ideas make sense. At the very minimum we learn something; at the maximum, we incorporate such ideas into the grand plan.
In my many years of observing Putin in action, I have found that this is something he is very good at.
SNEAK PEEK AND PREVIEW OF CHANCES
The Russian political old timers’ popularity (leader of right-wing LDPR Zhrininovsky, KPRF communists’ leader Zyuganov, Fair Russia’s Sergey Mironov) has dwindled to the point of Zyuganov and Mironov deciding not to run at all, while Zhirinovsky lost up to 1/2 of his previous rating.
Putin’s rating increased slightly.
The #2 contender Pavel Grudinin’s rating has shown positive dynamics and has grown substantially since one month ago, although his numbers are still very minor compared to Putin.
The new faces of the Russian presidential race, Pavel Grudinin and Ksenia Sobchak represent the opposite sides of the spectrum and are in fact very interesting and very telling. I will have separate posts about each of them and what they stand for, as I received a number of questions about both.
Minor oligarch Pavel Grudinin represents Communists and the unified Left Block (yes, you’ve heard me right!). TV personality Ksenia Sobchak represents pro-US, pro-West opposition, who believe that everything is wrong in Russia and with Russia.
Their stories are so fascinating that they deserve separate articles. Stay tuned for that!
Meanwhile, the results of the January 16, 2018 poll tell their own story. No comment — it’s rather self-explanatory!
APPROVAL RATINGS OF TOP RUSSIAN PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDERS 2018
Vladimir Putin 73.8%
Pavel Grudinin 7.2%
Vladimir Zhirinovsky 4.7%
Ksenya Sobchak 1%
Grigory Yavlinsky 0.6%
Boris Titov 0.3%
You get my drift, right?..
