Putin about ‘unbelievable idiots’ who organized energy blockade of Crimea

Vladimir Putin took questions at the Crimea Russian Popular Front’s Action Forum (Rus: ОНФ). This new Putin’s mini-replica about those who organized the energy blockade of Crimea is going viral.

Translation: ‘As to the water blockade of Crimea, or the recent energy sabotage of Crimea, you know, it’s a borderline crime against humanity when such large region with 2.6 million population gets disconnected from electric power entirely during winter. Yet, no human rights organizations had shown up to protest this crime. Probably swallowed their tongues. Not a word anywhere. In reality, it’s a serious crime. What about hospitals, children and the elderly? Yet they are all silent, as if it’s a normal thing.

I personally admired how Crimeans took such hardship: I was impressed with their courage, organized response and determination.

As to those who did it, it was just dumb. What were they thinking, that we’ll all drop to our knees and plead for mercy? Just amazing – unbelievable idiots.’

Both water blockade and energy blockade of Crimea were organized by Ukraine’s Kiev junta in 2014 and 2015.

As a result Russia built the Energy Bridge to Crimea via the Kerch Strait (4 multi-purpose power/cable/phone lines through the bottom of Black Sea) in record time. Crimean peninsula is now completely independent of Ukraine’s powerlines, which, incidentally, were all built by the USSR.

The Crimean Bridge (Krimskiy Most) is auto/rail bridge to Crimea through the Kerch Strait, which is also being built. Dubbed the Construction of the Century, it is expected to start working in 2017.

Having done everything to sever all relations with Russia, at this time Ukraine is risking a very freezing winter. Now Ukraine doesn’t produce enough electricity to even satisfy its fast shrinking, because of falling economy, needs. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s demonstrative refusal to buy Russian gas in favor of buying the so-called ‘reverse gas’ from Poland and Slovakia alarmed the “European partners.” The reverse gas is still Russian gas that supposedly first went through Ukraine’s gas pipe to Slovakia/Poland, and then supposedly returned back to Ukraine. Of course, in reality no such thing occurs. Ukraine just takes that gas as it passes through its territory.

EU is worried that come winter Ukraine will be stealing European transit gas. The result is that suddenly, very quietly, EU authorized Gazprom to fill to full capacity the Opal Pipeline extension from Nord Stream – something that seemed impossible just recently due to sanctions and fierce lobbying by US and Brussels.

This will effectively reduce gas volumes going through Ukraine. When Turkish Stream is built, Ukraine’s pipe will become obsolete.
